5 MICRONS
WITH WHITNEY SPICER
ONE
WHO IS WHITNEY SPICER?
I am a mum of three boys living with my husband Tim at Manildra in the Central West of NSW. I am an artist, and have been very fortunate to have transitioned my art into a line of accessories and casual clothing FAR MER, for women just like myself.
TWO
What aspects of Iris and Wool’s products align with your artistic style and philosophy?
I enjoy Iris & Wool's classic style clothing, minimal colour
palette. They are also comfortable and timeless pieces to add to your wardrobe. Qualities of which I would hope people find in my own artwork, timeless, a muted pallet and comfortable to live with and enjoy.
THREE
What is your approach to creating artwork? Can you walk us through your creative process from concept to completion
A concept is often sparked by an image I come across, a landscape I witness or a setting I enjoy. From which a sketch evolves. On putting paint to canvas, once an undercoat is applied, the same sketch is re-created to scale. I then use layers of acrylic paint to build the focal image, finishing with the shadowing and background.
FOUR
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
Our rural setting is very inspirational and pivitol to the current topic I have been exploring, which is of a western nature. I have loved re-creating farm or ranch scenes with their rural landscapes, animals and cowboys. I am also quietly obsessed with Western themed movies, television, books...all of this contributes to my love of the cowboy culture and representing it in my work.
FIVE
What do you love about Australian merino wool?
It is a clever fabric, it feels well suited to our climate, which is
helpful, given living in our region we can experience up to 4 seasons in one day. It feels warm when it needs to be, and unexpectedly cooler when required. It also feels like quality, and a wardrobe investment that won't be regrettable.
SIX
What’s your go-to-look for a working day?
Working on my own most days, my attire isn't necessarily about looks, but more so comfort. I do often wear jeans and a button up oversized shirt, or T-Shirt.
SEVEN
What’s next for you as an artist?
I'm returning from a trip to Tasmania, which has sparked my love of the seaside once again. I'm hoping to get back to some ocean side creature studies again, perhaps even some shells, crabs and oysters...all things I've recently enjoyed on my little getaway. I will keep up my western works, but its always nice to change it up, it keeps things fun and interesting.
