5 MICRONS

WITH GLYNIS TRAILL-NASH

ONE

WHO IS GLYNIS TRAILL-NASH?

I’m very contradictory—also a Gemini! For work I’m a fashion writer who is trying to regain some balance as a singer. Off-duty I’m a slob who loves sequins, an over-thinker who under-exercises, and a maximalist who aspires to minimalism.

TWO

What first sparked your passion for fashion, and how has your journey evolved in the industry?

I loved fashion as a kid, although I was also a real tomboy as I grew up on a small property in Perth. My Mum taught me to knit and sew, and we would watch midday movie marathons on weekends, which kicked off an obsession with the glamour of the Golden Age of Hollywood and, later, vintage fashion. When I eventually started writing about fashion, it was the style side of it that I was interested in. But the longer you do this job—and this year marks 21 years for me—the more you dig into the business of the industry (which is super interesting) and the more issues you uncover (which can be quite disturbing).

THREE

Given your fashion background, what would you love everyone in the fashion world to know about wool?

It’s simply the most sustainable fibre available—and Australian merino is the world’s best. In its purest form wool is resilient, soft, strong, cocooning, recyclable, biodegradable, versatile… I could go on. I love wearing wool and knitwear is one of my absolute weaknesses.

FOUR

You have a show during the popular Adelaide Fringe, In These Shoes. Can you tell us a bit about the show and the inspiration behind it?

I’m so pumped for Adelaide Fringe—my first! The show is essentially inspired by my career in fashion. There’s a tiny bit of bio—how a kid from the outer Perth suburbs ended up on the front row at Paris Fashion Week—and a lot of anecdotes and observations about fashion from first-hand experience. There are some fantastic songs—some well-known, others less so— and of course some beautiful custom costumes, from Alemais and Mariam Seddiq. It’s also (I’m told) very funny. One review described it as “an absolute romp of fun”—which made me especially happy. If you’re in Adelaide or surrounds, do come. FIVE

How did you get into performing cabaret, seems a far cry from the catwalk!

My singing actually predates my fashion career. I’ve always sung jazz and played gigs on the side (my CD, GT Nash After Blue, is on Spotify and Apple music), but when I started getting the big fashion jobs, especially fashion editor of The Australian, the more that took over my focus. My last cabaret show was (alarmingly) 27 years ago at the Edinburgh Fringe, and I’ve been itching to do another one in recent years. Now that I’m freelancing I have some control over my time again. Given the gap between shows, I figured I’d better go with a theme that people already associated me with. Hence, a fashion-themed cabaret!
